I've been a public school classroom volunteer, education advocate, homeschool teacher, and, with my Bachelor of Science degree in Biological Sciences, a public school substitute teacher. I am a public speaker about education issues that negatively impact highly to profoundly gifted children in general and Black boys in particular.
I've seen the darker side of how a gifted child and a Black boy can be treated by public schools. My son survived to be a positive, productive adult, but many children don't because the adults in their lives, unaware of what's really going on in their child's classes, take no steps to minimize the damage.
After my son no longer needed me to advocate for him, I decided to keep advocating for the sake of other children going through similar mistreatment in public schools.
